Gender Identities 101: Embracing Inclusivity and Understanding
Today’s presentation will cover the highlights and key concepts from a much longer workshop on gender identities. Covered topics include:
- Lived experiences of the presenter, as well as a brief introduction to why understanding in this area is so important.
- Pronouns: The significance of pronouns and how to use and respect them appropriately and how they contribute to creating an inclusive environment.
- Sexual Orientation vs. Gender Identity: The distinctions between sexual orientation and gender identity, as well as the importance of recognizing and respecting both. We will discuss common misconceptions and offer guidance on embracing diversity within these aspects of identity.
- Gender Identities: Different gender identities beyond the binary understanding. Including non-binary, genderqueer, genderfluid, and other identities, creating a more comprehensive understanding of the diverse experiences and journeys of individuals.
- Creating Safe Spaces: Some practical strategies for creating safe and inclusive spaces that validate and support individuals of all gender identities. Discover ways to cultivate an environment that encourages authenticity, respect, and dignity for everyone.
Special guest presenter Danielle Bonanno
Danielle is the Executive Director of Inclusive Recovery Athens, as well as the Community Engagement Specialist for Acceptance Recovery Center. She has been an advocate for various oppressed and stigmatized populations, including those with substance use disorders, LGBTQIA2S+, homeless and low income, and individuals with complex traumas.
Danielle also plays a pivotal role in enhancing the lives of individuals in the greater Athens area as the President of Athens Pride and Queer Collective, the foremost nonprofit organization in Northeast Georgia dedicated to promoting the well-being of queer individuals through education, outreach, event curation, and support.

Please welcome Brandy Anderson as the new producer and host for our Learning Community webinar series.
Brandy is founder and CEO of Acceptance Recovery Center in Athens GA, and one of NARR’s newest Board Members. She is a heartfelt dynamo with a vision and a dream. She is developing them both into a revolutionary recovery movement. Working in the addiction field since 2011, Brandy has continually demonstrated exceptional versatility and a sincere desire to be of service to people who struggle with Substance Use Disorders.
Brandy has been in recovery since 2009 and she realized her dream of opening the Acceptance Recovery Center in 2015. As a queer woman who has faced her addiction battles head on and emerged victorious, she is specially equipped with insight and understanding to lead others into the light.

Registering for NARR’s monthly call-in events
NARR hosts two monthly national web-based events. Both are open to anyone, but you must register for each series. Here’s how:
Monthly Open Call, 11:00 – noon EST, first Friday each month
The monthly call is open to all. The meeting is a chance to learn about recent developments in the recovery housing field, but is devoted mostly to your questions and challenges. We welcome your questions and news updates about operations, policies, standards, ethical issues and other matters of concern.

Monthly Learning Community event: 3:30 – 5:00 PM EST, second Wednesday of each month
This event is dedicated primarily to showcasing and discussing best practices for the operation of recovery residences. Each session usually begins with a short guest presentation, followed by participant discussion.

Both of these monthly events are hosted on Zoom. You will receive an email before the call with a unique link that will let you access the event, instructions about dialing in, etc. Note that, if you want to be able to speak on the call, you will need to connect using the link provided to you in the email. if you connect using only the phone number, you will be in listen-only mode.
