Gary Bowden - Board Member - Acceptance Recovery Center

Gary N. Bowen retired from Athens/Clarke County in September 2021. He began his employment with Athens/Clarke County in 2005 as the probation officer for what is now the N. Kent Lawrence DUI Court. His duties included office visits, drug and alcohol tests, home and employment visits, downtown patrols, welfare checks, investigation of complaints, warrant service and enforcement of probation conditions as well as DUI Court policies. Prior to his employment with Athens-Clarke County, Mr. Bowen was with the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles for over 17 years. As an Assistant Chief in the Athens Parole Office, Mr. Bowen was the program management supervisor. He oversaw treatment for substance abuse, mental health, sex offenders, cognitive skills and also conducted electronic monitoring. Mr. Bowen began his law enforcement career in 1987 as a Police Officer with the Dekalb County Georgia Department of Public Safety. Mr. Bowen received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Georgia in 1985. He was a Georgia P.O.S.T. certified instructor and a P.O.S.T certified firearms instructor.
