At Acceptance Recovery Center, this month holds a special place in our hearts, as it aligns with our mission to create inclusive and safe recovery spaces for our LGBTQ siblings.

LGBTQ History Month is not just a celebration of our past; it’s a reminder of the brave leaders who paved the way for the rights and acceptance we enjoy today. It’s an opportunity to honor their sacrifices and continue their legacy by ensuring that every person in recovery feels seen, heard, and supported.

Our commitment to inclusivity extends beyond words—it’s a fundamental part of our organization’s DNA. We understand that recovery is a deeply personal journey, and we’re here to provide unwavering support every step of the way. Whether you identify as LGBTQ or not, your path to recovery is valid, and your story matters.

We carry on the work of LGBTQ leaders by fostering a community where love, acceptance, and resilience thrive. It’s our privilege to be a part of your journey, and we’re dedicated to creating spaces where everyone can find hope and healing.

I’m excited to share that we have a special event on the horizon. Our upcoming gala, Give Recovery a Voice: Art as a Form of Freedom, promises to be a night of inspiration and unity. We’ll have the honor of hearing from Jeff Graham, the Executive Director of Georgia Equality, whose tireless efforts have advanced fairness, safety, and opportunity for LGBTQ communities. Jeff’s insights will undoubtedly inspire us all.

Recovery Assistant Ashley Duke:
Our 2023 Recovery Hero!

At this year’s Athens Recovery Fest, we had the privilege of honoring one of our own—Recovery Assistant Ashley Duke—as our Recovery Hero 2023. Ashley’s dedication and commitment to the cause of recovery have made her a true beacon of hope in our community.

Just last week, Ashley’s heroic actions demonstrated the incredible impact of her work. A stranger approached one of our locations seeking Narcan to save a life. Without hesitation, Ashley sprang into action, swiftly providing the life-saving Narcan and even rushing next door to ensure its administration. In this critical moment, her quick thinking and compassionate response made all the difference.

Ashley embodies the spirit of our mission day in and day out. She continually helps restore the lives of those who enter our program, equipped with the tools, knowledge, and dedication necessary to effect meaningful change.

Her courage and unwavering commitment serve as a profound reminder of our collective “why.” Ashley Duke exemplifies the qualities of a true Recovery Hero, and our respect and admiration for her have grown exponentially. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Ashley for being exactly who she is—a shining light in the world of recovery.

Celebrating Our Community Engagement Specialist:
Danielle Bonanno

We are thrilled to share that our very own Community Engagement Specialist, Danielle Bonanno, has been awarded the Community Leader of the Year by the OUT Georgia Business Alliance. This recognition is a testament to Danielle’s exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to our LGBTQ+ community.

Danielle’s contributions extend far beyond her role at Acceptance Recovery Center. She also serves as the Executive Director of Inclusive Recovery Athens and also serves as the President at Athens Pride and Queer Collective. Her tireless dedication to creating inclusive, affirming, and supportive spaces for our LGBTQ+ siblings in recovery and beyond is truly commendable.

Danielle’s work is a driving force in our community, fostering unity, acceptance, and empowerment for all. Her ability to lead, inspire, and uplift is remarkable, and her impact on the lives she touches is immeasurable.
